How do I measure an Oil Seal?

With an oil seal, there are 3 dimensions that are important to know whether you have the right size. But how do I know how to measure an oil seal? How do you know what dimensions to measure? How do you know if you measure the dimensions correctly?

There are three dimensions that you should measure correctly: the Rod Diameter (inner size), the Outer Diameter (outer size) and the Height.

How do you measure the correct inner size of an Oil Seal?

When you measure the inner size of an oil seal, you do NOT measure the inside of the oil seal. You just measure the rod size where you are going to mount the oil seal. If you measure the inner size of the oil seal, it can deviate greatly from the correct size. If you measure the rod size, you know for sure that you have the right inner diameter for your oil seal (see the video). The inner size is always smaller than the inner size.

How do you measure the correct outer size of an Oil Seal?

The outer diameter of an oil seal is easy to measure. You just measure from one outside to the other outside of the oil seal (see the video). So you measure the entire width of the oil seal. You can also measure the height very easily. This is usually the largest size and is always larger than the inner size.

How do you measure the correct height of an Oil Seal?

You can also measure the height very easily. You measure the oil seal from the bottom to the top of the seal (see the video). So you actually measure how thick the oil seal is. This is usually the smallest size, but it doesn't always have to be.
