Construction and Design of the Domsel B Seal

The design of the Domsel B seal is optimized for durability and performance. Unlike traditional seals, the Domsel B does not use a spiral spring to apply pressure on the lip. Instead, an internal reinforcement ring ensures even and reliable pressure on the shaft. This springless design significantly reduces friction and prevents shaft wear. The lip is short, flexible, and provides excellent sealing even at high rotational speeds. The metal outer casing of the seal guarantees a firm press fit in the housing and prevents extrusion under higher pressures. Thanks to this construction, the Domsel B-type oil seal is suitable for applications up to approximately 15 bar pressure and peripheral speeds of up to 32 m/s.

Applications of the Domsel B Seal

The Domsel B seal is used across various industries. In the food industry, it is used in mixers, pumps, and agitators where hygiene and temperature resistance are essential. Thanks to the option of FDA-compliant versions, the B-profile seal from Domsel is suitable for direct contact with food. In mechanical engineering and chemical processing, this seal is valued for its high pressure and temperature resistance. Typical applications include gearboxes, compressors, centrifugal pumps, and electric motors. The Domsel B seal is also suitable for dynamic loads, pulsating pressure, and high rotational speeds, making it ideal for demanding industrial environments.

Material Options: The Right Composition for Every Application

Domsel type B seals are available in a variety of elastomer materials, each with their own characteristics. NBR (nitrile rubber) is suitable for standard applications involving oil, grease, and water, with a temperature range up to approximately 100°C. It is a cost-effective and versatile option but less suitable for aggressive chemicals. FKM (Viton®) is chemically resistant and withstands high temperatures up to around 200°C, making it ideal for chemical processes, hot air, and oil vapors. However, it is slightly less flexible at low temperatures. EPDM excels in resistance to hot water, steam, and oxidation. It is highly suitable for cleaning processes in the food industry but not usable for oil-based applications. Silicone, finally, can be used in both very low and high temperatures, ranging from -45°C to +200°C. It is particularly suited for static sealing and applications without abrasive loads, although it is less wear-resistant under dynamic use.

In addition, there are advanced materials available for more specialized applications. HNBR (hydrogenated nitrile rubber) is a modified version of NBR with improved temperature resistance (-30°C to +150°C) and enhanced wear resistance. It combines the oil resistance of NBR with the strength of high-performance elastomers, making it suitable for high-load or long-term thermal environments. FFKM (perfluoroelastomer) is the most chemically resistant rubber compound and suitable for extremely aggressive chemicals, solvents, and high temperatures exceeding 250°C. It is ideal for critical sealing in the chemical industry, pharmaceuticals, and high-end equipment, although it is one of the most expensive material options.

In addition to the elastomer material, the outer casing can also be made from standard steel or stainless steel (SS), depending on the required corrosion resistance.

Material Table

Materiaal

Temperatuurbereik

Belangrijkste eigenschappen

NBR (Nitrilrubber)

–20°C tot +100°C

Goed bestand tegen olie, vet en water; lage kosten; beperkte chemische resistentie

HNBR

–30°C to +150°C

Enhanced mechanical strength and abrasion resistance; good for higher thermal loads; resistant to oil and ozone

FKM (Viton®)

–30°C tot +200°C

Zeer goed bestand tegen hoge temperaturen en chemicaliën; minder flexibel bij lage temperaturen

FFKM

0°C to +260°C (or higher)

Exceptional chemical resistance; handles aggressive media and high heat; ideal for critical sealing in pharmaceutical and chemical industries

EPDM

How to Choose the Right Domsel B Seal

Selecting the right Domsel B seal depends on several factors such as shaft diameter, housing diameter, operating conditions (temperature, pressure, medium), and rotational speed. It is common to select according to DIN 3760 standards to ensure the seal fits standard housings. When measuring, pay attention to tolerances: the shaft should fall within h9/h11 and the housing bore within H7/H8, with a surface finish of approximately Ra 0.4 μm for optimal sealing. The material is selected based on the medium's properties. NBR is suitable for standard oils and greases, FKM is ideal for high temperatures and chemical media, EPDM is best for steam and hot water, and silicone is suitable for extreme temperatures without much dynamic load. In case of doubt, always consult the manufacturer's datasheets or speak with a specialist.

In summary, the Domsel Seal B is an efficient sealing solution specifically engineered for rotating machinery in the machine building industry. With its reduced frictional moment, impressive pressure and temperature resistance, high chemical resistance, and reliable sealing performance, the Domsel Seal B is a top choice for various applications. Trust in the Domsel Seal B for your sealing needs and experience the benefits of a reliable and efficient sealing solution in your rotating machinery.

FAQ

What is the difference between Domsel type A and B seals?

Type A has the lip facing the mounting direction (for internal sealing), while type B has the lip facing away from the mounting direction (for external sealing).

What pressure can the Domsel B seal handle?

Up to approximately 10–15 bar, depending on the version and medium.

Can I use a Domsel B seal in the food industry?

Yes, provided it is made of FDA-compliant material such as EPDM or silicone and preferably with a stainless steel casing.

How do I properly install a Domsel B seal?

Ensure a clean, smooth shaft and housing, lightly grease the lip, and use a suitable installation tool to avoid damage.

Is the Domsel B seal suitable for both rotation directions?

Yes, thanks to its design without pump grooves, it is insensitive to rotation direction.

When should I choose FKM instead of NBR?

When dealing with higher temperatures (>100°C) or chemically aggressive media such as solvents or acids.
